Never played before? Here’s a run down of the game:
Kalooki is a game that is closely related to Rummy. The aim is to try to get rid of your cards that you have in your hand. You will be using 2 decks of cards (52 cards in each deck) and 2 Jokers, a total 106. 2. Tables are made up of 3, 4 or 5 players only and can be up to 30 players in one competition.
Card Values:
To begin the ‘Dealer’ will shuffle the deck and deal 13 cards to each player around the table. The rest of the deck is placed in front of the dealer as a Draw pile. The player on the left goes first.
Next you want to make some ‘sets’ with your cards. The most well known is called a ‘Run’ and it consists of three or more cards that are of the same suit and in ascending order e.g. 2, 3,4 or a Jack, Queen, King etc. Aces can be both low and high. Jokers are wild so this means you can also use a Joker card to complete sets if you need to. A run can also be any length as long as you have the correct cards in your hand.
When you play your cards, you want to aim to get around 50 points minimum, for example if you were to declare you were making a 5-card run e.g. 9, 10, Jack Queen and a King you have 49 points in total. 9+10+10+10+10 = 49 points. Any cards left in your hand at the end will incur what’s known as penalty points. You would tally up these card values and this would be your score at the end of the round. If you go over 101 points, you’re out!
It's not just a game – it's a battle of wits and strategy! Come and play, outsmart and win. See you at the tables!
